Roger Lee Smith was born December 21, 1933 at George, Lyon county, Iowa. He was the son of Ralph and Mae (Veenker) Smith. He was a life long resident of the George area. He graduated from the George High School. Roger served in the US Army.

He married Marilyn Grace Klaassen of Little Rock, Lyon county, Iowa on November 20, 1959 at Salem Reformed Church in Little Rock. He managed the AMOCO service station in George for 18 years. He later worked at the George Coop Elevator in George and at John’s Steak House.

Roger died Friday, January 1, 1999 at the V.A. Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, after a long illness at the age of 65.

He leaves to cherish his memories one daughter, Sharon Luong of South Sioux City, Nebraska and one son, Curtis Smith of Denver, Colorado. Also left to cherish his memories are four grandchildren: Amber, Brittany, Courtney, Luong and Roger Smith; two brothers, Ronald and wife Bonnie Smith and Jerry and wife Elvira Smith, all of George, Iowa; three sisters, Muriel and husband Kenneth Grooters of Verdi, Minnesota; Audrey and husband Norman Grooters of Vancouver, Washington; and Carol and husband Judson Schrick of Decorah, Iowa.

Preceding Roger in death were his wife, Marilyn; his parents, two infant daughters, Rhonda and Sandra; two brothers, Norman and Charles; and one sister, Eleanor Smith.

Funeral services for Roger Smith were held on Tuesday, January 5, 1999 at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George, Iowa, with burial the same day at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery west of town.
