GEERDES, Glenis Melvin 1931-2006

Glenis Melvin Geerdes was born on January 30, 1931 in George, Lyon county, Iowa, the son of Viola (Bush) and Harm Geerdes. He attended Dale Township country school in Lyon county.

Glenis joined the Navy on December 7, 1950 for four years, and served in the Korean War. On August 26, 1952, he was united in marriage to Donna Janssen. To this union four children were born. In 1959, Darrel Korthals joined the Geerdes family and lived with them for ten years. In 1978, Glenis' oldest daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Dayrl Rosenboom, were killed in an accident leaving three grandchildren for Glenis and Donna and Art and Virginia Rosenboom to raise. Donna passed away in 1991 leaving three grandchildren in Glenis' care.

Glenis was a member of the Zoar Presbyterian Church. He spent 52 years farming west of George. Some of his favorite activities include camping, fishing and spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed camping at Cutty's, Hart Ranch, and in Tucson, Arizona.
On April 8, 2006, Glenis died at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of seventy-five.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his fiancée, Virginia Deutsch of George; two daughters, Carol Schubert and her husband, Steve of Rock Rapids, Iowa; and Kae Richter and her husband, Michael of East Troy, Wisconsin; one son, Craig Geerdes and his wife, Dannelle of George; eight grandchildren, Dean Rosenboom and his wife, Tiffany; Tami Van Meeteren and her husband, Mike; Jon Rosenboom; Nicholas and David Poolman; Kody Burmeister and Terron and Nolan Geerdes; six great grandchildren, Tyson and Halle Sue Rosenboom, Hannah and Gabriel Mueller; Madison Sue Van Meeteren and Dawson Rosenboom; two brothers, Kenneth Geerdes and his wife Elaine and Loren Geerdes and his wife Charlotte; one sister, Carolyn Blumeyer and her husband John.
Glenis was preceded in death by his wife, Donna; parents, Harm and Viola Geerdes; daughter, Jan Rosenboom; two son-in-laws, Daryl Rosenboom and Kevin Marra; and infant great grandson, Jackson Mueller.

Funeral services for Glenis Geerdes were held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at Zoar Presbyterian Church, George, Iowa with interment in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery George, Iowa with graveside military honors provided by the Jack Sauter Post No. 404 American Legion of George, Iowa.
