PALS, Cornelius 1902-2001

Cornelius Pals was born on December 12, 1902 in Leaf River, Illinois to Peter and Fannie (Heeren) Pals.

The Pals family moved to Twin Brooks, South Dakota in 1906 when Cornelius was four years of age. Other moves included Little Rock, Lyon county, Iowa; George, also in Lyon county, Iowa; Ash Creek, Minnesota; and finally back to a farm northwest of George. Cornelius was one of nine children. He attended country school while helping out on the family farm.

At The age of 21, Cornelius went to work for his brother-in-law, Lou Wibben on the Wibben farm north of George. He became a Lyon County employee in 1936. In 1942 be began working for the county as a road grader operator until his retirement in 1968.

Cornelius and Alice Schmidt were married on February 10, 1932 in George, Iowa. They first made their home on a acreage north of George. One daughter, Carol Kae, was born to that union on February 26, 1939. They moved to the city of George in 1942 and lived in three different homes. They built a new home on East Michigan Street and moved into their newly constructed home in the fall of 1960. This was the same year that their daughter was married to James G. Ellison of Lime Springs, Iowa. Cornelius and his beloved wife of 62 years remained together until the Lord took Alice home on July 11, 1993. He continued to live in their house until his stroke in March of 1995 severely affected the left side of his body. Since then be has been a resident at The George Community Good Samaritan Center where be passed away August 29, 2001.

Cornelius and Alice loved to travel. Through the earlier years they made many memorable trips around the United States and Canada with their daughter and family. He was an avid reader before be lost his eyesight due to an inherited macular degeneration condition. He especially loved to read and study road maps. He was an active member of the Lyon County First Presbyterian Church of George, located 2 1/2 miles southeast of George, where he served as Deacon and also in other varied capacities. He truly loved the Lord and his church. He and Alice attended church faithfully and regularly.

He leaves to cherish his memories: one daughter, Carol Kae and husband, the Rev. James Ellison of Pine City, Minnesota; two grandsons, Brad Ellison and his wife, Paula, of Robbinsdale, Minnesota; Bryan Ellison and his wife, Teri, of Mora, Minnesota; two great-grandsons, Andrew Ellison and Blake Ellison; one great-grand-daughter, Esther Anna Marie Ellison; three sisters, Fannie Kampen of Dawson, Minnesota; Hazel Elzinga of Rock Rapids, Iowa; and Irene Bootie of Hull, Iowa; one brother, Vernon Pals of Fulda, Minnesota; many nieces and nephews. His niece and sister-in-law, Lila Hansmann and Leona Klaassen, were so faithful in their continued visits through the years which was so very much appreciated.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alice; his parents; two sisters, NeIlie Jacobs and Hattie Wibben and two brothers, Alvin Pals and Clinton Pals.
