LONG, AXEL CELANDER 1901 - 1992

Rev. Axel Celander Long, 91, formerly of 504 Edward Drive, Sioux Falls, died Sunday November 1, 1992 at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls.

He was born in rural Larchwood, Iowa, on October 18, 1901. His early education was in the nearby rural school. He received his college degree at Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa; his seminary training at North Park College, Chicago, Illinois and Master of Theology at Presbyterian Seminary, Omaha, Nebraska. In 1933, he was ordained in the Iowa Des Moines Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

He was united in marriage with Margaret E. Davies on December 27, 1933, in Sioux City, Iowa. She preceded him in death in 1959. In 1963, he was transferred to the Minnesota Conference of the Methodist Church.

On August 20, 1963, he was joined in marriage with Margaret A. Vinnzant at Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was pastor of churches in the Iowa Conference and later in the Minnesota Conference for a total of 42 years. He retired in 1970 and moved to Sioux Falls.

Axel was thankful for his religious and Swedish heritage and had a caring concern for people. His love of Scriptures, great literature, history, poetry and worldwide travel enhanced his ministry.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; one son, Robert E. of Iowa City, Iowa; three grandchildren; four brothers; Palmer and Joe, both of Sioux Falls, Carl of Harrisburg, and David of Larchwood; three sisters; Mrs. Gilmer (Betty) Hildring of Larchwood, Mrs. Sylvia Maass of Garretson, and Mrs. Fred (Josephine) Oltmanns.

Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, November 5, 1992, at the First United Methodist Church, in Sioux Falls, with burial at a later time in Grandview Covenant Cemetery in rural Larchwood.

Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday at George Boom Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls.

Honorary Pallbearers: Robert Long, Paul Hildring, Loren Long, Larry Long, Mark Long, Daniel Long, Timothy Long, Stanley Oltmanns, Daryl Oltmanns, Kenneth Mannes.

Memorial services for Rev. Axel Long, 91, or Sioux Falls, South Dakota, were held November 5, 1992 at First United Methodist Church, Sioux Falls, with interment at a later date in Grandview Covenant Cemetery, rural Larchwood, Lyon county, Iowa.

He died on Sunday, November 1, 1992 at the Good Samaritan Center, Sioux Falls.

He served the Wesley Church, St. Paul, Minnesota and First Church, Austin, Minnesota, before retiring in 1970 and moving to Sioux Falls.

He was preceded in death by his first wife.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; one son, Robert E. of Iowa City, Iowa; three grandchildren; four brothers, Palmer and Joe, both of Sioux Falls, Carl of Harrisburg, South Dakota, and David of Larchwood, and three sisters, Mrs. Gilmer (Betty) Hildring of Larchwood, Mrs. Sylvia Maass of Garretson, South Dakota, and Mrs. Fred (Josephine) Oltmanns.
