Merlyn Dean Popkes was born on November 22, 1964 at Rock Rapids, Iowa, the son of Murnice and Donna (Krull) Popkes. He lived his life in the Ellsworth and Little Rock area, attending the Little Rock High School and graduating in 1983. He had attended NITC in Sheldon, Iowa

He died due to an accident on May 23, 1984 at the age of 19 years,6 months and 2 days.

He is survived by his parents, Murnice and Donna of Ellsworth; by two brothers, Darrin and Gaylon; by three sisters: Wendy, Dorene and Dawn, all at home; and by his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Menno Popkes of George, Mrs. and Mrs. Henry Krull of Beaver Creek, Minnesota.

Funeral services were held on May 26, 1984 from Hope Reformed Church in rural George, Iowa, Pastor Gerald DeLoof and Pastor Brian Hellenga officiating. Interment was in the Hope Reformed Cemetery.
