Etta Esther Klaassen was born January 8, 1909 at rural Little Rock, Iowa, the daughter of Klaas A. and Lena (Hassebroek) Klaassen. She attended Grant Township Country School.

On February 27, 1935 she was united in marriage to Herman Buss, and they farmed in the Little Rock and Rock Rapids areas until 1953 when they moved to their farm near Rushmore, Minnesota. They retired to their present home in Little Rock in 1974. She was a member of the Salem Reformed Church.

Etta's sense of humor was one of the many things that her family and friends loved about her. Another of her talents was her superb cooking and baking, especially her delicious homemade buns which she frequently shared with others. Etta was also a skilled seamstress. The variety of linens displaying the precision of her crocheting and embroidering will always be treasured family herlooms.

Etta died at the Worthington Regional Hospital , Worthington, Minnesota, on Sunday, January 2, 2000, at the age of 90.

She is survived by her husband, Herman, her children: Vernette and Ronald Wiertsema of Rushmore, Minnesota; Delores Springman of Owatonna, Minnesota; Daryl and Sharon Buss of Madison, Wisconsin, her sister-in-law, Elma Klaassen of Sibley, Iowa; nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, three sisters, a son-in-law, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral servce was held on Wednesday, January 5, 2000 at Salem Reformed Church of Little Rock, Iowa, with Pastor Brian Hellinga officiating. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Little Rock, Iowa. The Bolin Funeral Chapel of Little Rock, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements.
