Longtime Resident of this Community Dies Monday at Home Here

Mrs. Gertje Harms, 87 Came to Lyon County in 1892

Mrs. Gertje Harms, a resident of this community since 1892, died early Monday morning succumbing to the ailments of old age. She had slept since Saturday morning, failing to waken before the end came. She was 87 years old.

Funeral services will be held this (Thursday) afternoon at 1 o’clock in the Bethel Reformed Church northwest of Little Rock. Internment will be made at the Bethel cemetery beside her husband who passed away June 19, 1913.

Gertje Harms, nee Brouwen, was born at Manschlagt, Ostfriesland, Germany, and June 19, 1848. She died at 7 o’clock a.m., June 15, 1936, at her home in Little Rock, Iowa. She came to this country in the year 1867, locating at Rochelle, Illinois. She was united in marriage to Harm W. Harms at White Rock, Illinois, in 1870, and resided there six years. From there they moved to Butler County, Iowa, where they remained sixteen years. In 1892 they moved to Lyon County, locating seven miles northwest of Little Rock, where they farmed until Mr. Harms passed away in 1913. In 1914, Mrs. Harms and her brother, Eildert Brouwen, came to Little Rock, where they have since resided.

Mrs. Harms was the mother of twelve children, four of whom preceded her in death. Those who survive are Johannes, George, Anna Hoting, Trentje Becker, all of Little Rock; Eildert Harms, Stillman Valley, Illinois; Effe De Beer, Rock Rapids; Harm Harms, Valley Springs, South Dakota; and John Harms of Sibley.
