The correct spelling is DIXSON not Dixon.

October 27, 1921 --- May 4, 2011

Donald Albert Dixson, age 89, passed away on Wednesday May 04, 2011 at the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center. Memorial celebration of Life Services will be held Saturday May 7, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 6 at Fielding Funeral Home.

Donald was born October 27, 1921 to James Morris and Elizabeth Ann (Plows) Dixson. He graduated from Lucas High School in 1939. Donald served his country during World War II from 1943 to 1946 as a combat medic with the 38th Portable Surgical Hospital Division. He served in the Northern Solomons, Luzon, Guadalcanal, Munda, Bouganville, and the Lindgalen Gulf. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation ribbon with star and Bronze Arrowhead for his service in the Pacific Theatre.

On August 29, 1947, Donald married Rita Mae Baker. They had seven children. Donald worked as a carpenter, farmer and retired from Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. After 27 years at Firestone, he and Rita enjoyed several years in the Ozarks and then returned to their home in Lucas. Donald enjoyed making cane sorghum and raising watermelons. He enjoyed singing and playing the harmonica with his family.

Donald was preceded in death by his father and mother, brothers William (Bill) and J.B. and sister, Dorothy Reynolds. Donald is survived by his wife Rita and their seven children: Janice (Ron) Adams of Spirit Lake; Bonnie Hammond of Indianola; Harry (Denise) Dixson of Lucas; Rhonda (Edgar) Enterline of Russell; Donnell (Randy) Snider of Chariton; Alan (Sheila) Dixson of Lampe, MO; Rodney (Carol) Dixson of Chariton. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center in Chariton, 1214 N. 7th St. Chariton, IA 50049.
