Mary Jane (Angstead) Smith was born Oct. 30, 1930, to Ira and Lula Angstead. She died of cancer on Sunday, October 6, 1996, at Kavanaugh House in Des Moines.

Mary Jane grew up in Chariton and graduated from Chariton High School in 1949. She married Darus Lee Smith of Knoxville on October 30, 1949, in Chariton. To this union five children were born;
Darus Mahlon Smith of The Homestead in Runnells, Marsha Jane (Smith) Payne of Des Moines, Nancy Elaine (Smith) Baldwin of Whitehouse, TX, Melody Lorraine(Smith) Wayne of Spring Hill, KS, and Melinda Fay (Smith) Lane of Colorado Springs, CO.

Mary Jane was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of the Chariton Church of the Nazarene, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was employed for 20 years by the Tendo Workshop as an Assistant Supervisor. She also served on the Tenco Board of Directors, as well as the board of the American Retardation Association. Mary Jane was an active member of the Iowa Genealogical Society and volunteered many hours at the Lucas County Genealogical Society Office in Chariton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Darus Smith, her parents, Ira and Lula Angstead, and six siblings, Iris Davenport, Irene Williams, Donovan Angstead, Gay Steinbach, Fay Olson and Mahlon "Buster Angstead.

Survivors include her five children, four sons-in-law, six grandchildren, Allison Payne, Austin Baldwin, Sarah Payne, Geoffrey Baldwin, Heather Wayne and Nathaniel Lane; two sisters, Norma Young of Des Moines, and Marguerite Johnson of New Mexico, one brother, Sonny Murphy of Elisabethtown, KY; two sisters-in-law, Lanell Rowland and Eunice Smith of Knoxville, and many friends.

Mary Jane was a devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed traveling and spent many days camping with friends and visiting her daughters. After the death of her husband, she raised her children alone, and was very proud of their achievements. She filled her home with books, music, and the love of God and her sense of humor and was well-loved by her friends and family.

Services were held Wednesday, October 9, 1996, at the Church of the Nazarene in Chariton. Interment was in the the Gosport Cemetery in Marion County.

Pallbearers were Lee Harrington, Everett Beals, Chris Belew, David Wayne, Neil Carruthers and Richard Mathes.

Mosher Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the family or The Homestead.
