Tuesday, October 26, 2004Carrie Elizabeth (Stevenson)Smith passed away at Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center on October 22, 2004 at the age of 99 years, 10 months and 3 days. She was surrounded by her family. Services were held at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton. Burial was in the Gosport Cemetery, Marion Co., IA
Carrie was born December 19, 1904 in Marion County, IA. she was the second child of Thomas D. and Nellie (Conrcy) Stevenson. She was raised in a Christian home and attended Mason Nazarene Church regularly and Chariton Nazarene Church in later years. Carrie was united in marriage to Harold N. Smith on December 25, 1924 at her parents hom in Marion Co., Two sons came to bless their home, Neil and Thomas Dwight.
Harold and Carrie spent their entire married life farming in Marion and Lucas Counties. After Harold's passing on October 22, 1969, Carrie moved into her home in Chariton to enjoy her remaining years. Carrie was a wonderful housekeeper and homemaker, and she excelled in gardening and cooking.
Though she was small in physical structure, she wasn't even five feet tall, she was very strong, hardworking, alwasys busy, generous, helpful and neighborly.
Carrie was a good mother, always putting her family's interests first and trying to please them. Neil and Tom remember the wonderful family Sunday dinners with their Grandpa and Grandma Stevenson and Grandpa and Grandma Smith, cousins, aunts and uncles. They also remember Sunday afternoon drives through the countryside as she and Harold enjoyed viewing the crops and nature's beauty, especially in the fall. She also loved spring and summer when she would garden and tend her flowers.
She was an avid gardener and definitely had a green thumb. Some of her favorite flowers were African Violets and Roses. She relished growing them and sharing with friends and family. She also raised canary birds and loved their singing. She always had an aquarium with tropical fish.
She was an excellent cook and always fixed what others liked. The family remembers her angel food cake, homemade pies, chicken and noodles and homemade ice cream. There was none beter.
She loved her family and was always delighted to have them visit or go visit them. She had a special relationship with her only grandson, Michael.
She is survived by her sons, Neil (Donna) of Chariton and Thomas D. (Jan) of Des Moines; grandson Mike (Jennifer) and great-grandson, Miles of Forest Park, IL. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents, brother, Glen Stevenson; and sister, Fern (Stevenson) Artz.
