Services for James David "Jim" Stout, Jr., 79, of rural Chariton, were held at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. A private burial was held at the Newbern Cemetery.

Mr. Stout passed away Sunday, June 27, 2004 at his home, the same farm he was born on May 10, 1925 to James David "Dave" Stout and Ella Grace (Smith) Stout. JD attended a one room school house and graduated from Chariton High School in 1943. He was married to Dorothy Davis on November 18, 1945. They were blessed with four children, Beverly, David, Joyce and Shirley.

JD was active in FFA and 4-H. He received the FFA State of Iowa Farmer Award and served as County 4-H President. He and Dorothy encouraged their children in 4-H by being involved in many leadership roles. In early years JD broke horses for hire. JD's passion was for the family farm, he operated The Family Century Farm in English Township since he was 19 years old. He made many improvements to the farm and kept a herd of registered Polled Hereford cattle for many years and enjoyed helping his Children with their cattle projects.

In 1960 JD went to work for the US Postal Service in Chariton until his retirement in 1990. After retiring he and Dorothy researched, compiled and published in 1991 a Stout and Allied families genealogical book.

JD was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy; his parents; and by his brothers, Boyd, Homer and Ed.

He is survived by his children, Beverly Berna of Dubuque, David Stout of DeSmet, SD, Joyce Chalfant of Gibsonia, PA, and Shirley Frederiksen of Walnut; eight grandchildren, Jamie, Jessica and Jacob Stout; Jason, Lisa and Sarah Berna; Ross and Brian Chalfant; and three great-grandchildren, Madison Stout and Cutler and Kasy Michalski.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Newbern Cemetery or to the Lucas County 4-H Scholarship.
