Tuesday, July 3, 1990Richard C. Newell died Saturday at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines of cancer. He was 47 years old.
Services were held at the Fielding Funeral Home, with burial in the McDivitt Grove Cemetery in Urbandale. The Rev. Jerry Hambleton conducted the service.
Mr. Newell had lived in Chariton since 1978. He was Chief Financial Officer for Hy-Vee Food Stores, Inc. and was Hy-Vee's treasurer and senior vice president. He also served as a trustee for Hy-Vee's profit-sharing system.
Among his numerous professional affiliations, Mr. Newell was on the National Bank & Trust Board of Directors, Perishable Distributors of Iowa Board, Handy Shops Board, Iowa Transfer System Board, the Financial Executive Institute, Iowa Venture Capital Fund and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
In addition, he was a past-president and member of the Chariton Rotary Club, and belonged to the Masonic Lodge, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, the R.S.V.P board, along with serving as treasurer of the Chariton Community Betterment Committee. He also was a past leader of Boy Scout Troop 149 of Chariton.
He was a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Surviving include a son, Scott, and two daughters, Nicole and Anji, all of Chariton; his mother, Alice Newell of Des Moines; and a brother, Raymond, also of Des Moines.
Memorials May be made to the Chariton Public Library Children's Room Fund.
