The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, September 5, 1907

R.L. PEPPER was born in Powlet, Vermont, May 10, 1845, and died at the home
of his sister, in Petosky, Mich., August 29, 1907, at the age of 62 years,
10 months and 19 days. At the age of 15 years he moved with his parents to
Castleton, Vermont, where he received his education in the Common Schools
and the Troy Conference Academy. He enlisted in the Vermont Cavalry at the
age of 18, and served in the same until the close of the war. He learned
telegraphy and was operator at Fairview and Castleton, Vermont, for a number
of years.

He was united in marriage at Castleton to MISS ANNIE MINER, May 8, 1867. In
1870 they came to Iowa, where they had since resided, and where he had been
in the employ of the C.B. & Q. Railroad. Two children were born into their
home, ROBBIE who died at the age of eleven, and ARTHUR, who only lived two
months. He had been in failing health since November, 1906, and thought a
change of climate might be beneficial, and went to Petosky, Mich., July 8th,
but gradually grew worse. He died at the home of his sister, MRS. RANSDELL,
where he had been during his stay in that city. The Knight Templars, of
which he was a member, escorted the remains to the station Saturday, and
arrived in Chariton Sunday.

Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church, Monday afternoon, conducted
by the pastor, Rev. Evans, assisted by Rev. Hakes and the Masonic Order
conducted the ceremonies at the cemetery.

Bro. PEPPER was converted in a great revival held in Castleton, Vt., in 1865
and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he remained an
active, devoted member until his death. He served the church in almost
every capacity during same period of his membership. He served in the
capacity of trustee, steward, choir leader, chorister of Sunday School,
president of Epworth League and was the first president of the men's league.
Whatever work was given him to do he did it faithfully. His constant
testimony was that while life seemed very bright, he was ready and willing
to go, whenever it was God's will.

CARD OF THANKS

Mrs. R.L. Pepper desires to express her gratitude to the friends and
neighbors for their kindly offices in her late bereavement and consignment
of her husband to the tomb, and for the beautiful floral offerings. While
these evidences of sympathy cannot lift the full burden of sorrow, yet it is
a great consolation to know there is a responsive chord in other hearts when
troubles come, and they seem easier to bear.
