After months of suffering, LENOX M. DUCKWORTH died at his home in Warren
Township, at 11:50 p.m., on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 1907, aged 78 years, 9
months and 21 days. He was a native of Putnam County, Indiana, coming to
this county in an early day, his parents being among the pioneers of this
part of Iowa, they settling in Cedar Township. He worked at the carpenter
business in Chariton for several years, later moving to the farm in Warren
Township, which has since been his home.

While a young man he was united in marriage to MISS ELIZABETH DAVIS, in
Chariton. To this union were born eight children, two dying in infancy --
six sons, surviving. At the beginning of the war of the rebellion he
enlisted in Co. E, 34th Iowa Infantry, and served through the conflict,
making an honorable record and ever held sacred that comradeship which
counted for so much during that time when the fate of a nation seemed to
hang in the balance. In civil life he was true to all trusts reposed in him
shrinking from no obligations -- loyal to his family and friends and never
wavered in that which he thought right. Thus the world is better that he
lived and his family and friends saddened at his taking away.

Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church, in this city, on Friday
afternoon, at 1:00 o'clock, in charge of the combined orders of the G.A.R.
and I.O.O.F., both of which he was an honored member, his old comrade and
friend, Rev. Joseph Parkins, delivering an appropriate discourse and paying
a beautiful tribute to his memory, after which his mortal remains were
deposited in the Chariton Cemetery. With him the conflict is over:

"On Fame's eternal camping ground

There silent tents are spread

While glory keeps with solemn round

The bivouac of the dead."

The children of L.M. DUCKWORTH desire in this way to express their thanks to
the neighbors and friends who so kindly assisted them in the late sickness
and subsequent death of father.

'IN MEMORIAM'

"The march of another comrade is over." LENOX MARTIN DUCKWORTH was born in
Putnam County, Indiana, December 4, 1828. He was brought up on a farm in
that State, and came to Lucas County, Iowa with his parents who settled in
Cedar Township, where he resided until he removed to Chariton about the year
of 1866. On the 13th day of December, 1855, he was married to MISS
ELIZABETH DAVIS, whose death occurred about seven years ago.

While a carpenter by occupation, he never gave up farming, and died on his
farm in Warren Township, September 25th, 1907, of stomach trouble
originating from his army service.

On the 9th day of August, 1861, he enlisted in Co. E 34th Iowa, as a
corporal, and was promoted to sergeant of Co. A. of same regiment, and
served with it, with fidelity and true soldierly fortitude and courage until
the close of the war.

On the 18th day of December he was mustered into Iseminger Post, and was
always a regular attendant upon its meetings and possessed the full
confidence and esteem of all his comrades.

For several years he held a position on the Soldier's Relief Commission, for
Lucas County, a position of honor and trust bestowed by the Board of
Supervisors. In 1856 he was beaten for Sheriff by a small majority, his
party (Republican) being in the minority.

This Post expresses its high regard for Comrade DUCKWORTH for his high
standing as a citizen, his supreme loyalty as a soldier, fighting not for
honor or glory, but for home and country; for his efficiency and fidelity as
a public officer, and for his uniform courtesy towards his comrades -- for
all these virtues we will ever cherish his memory as a valued inheritance
until we, too, shall be called to join the great throng awaiting us on the
other side.

Resolved, That this memorial be spread upon the minutes of the Post and that
a copy thereof be furnished the family of our deceased brother.
