'The Father of Postmaster R.A. Hasselquist Passed Away.'

------------------------

S.M. HASSELQUIST, born in Sweden February 27, 1823, departed this life February 20, 1907, at the home of his daughter, MRS. FREDA THORNE of Cedar Township. Funeral was held last Saturday from the house and conducted by Rev. A.H. Stote of Russell. Interment being made at the Bethel Cemetery in Benton Township, beside the grave of his wife, who had preceded him in death, August 29, 1901.

S.M. HASSELQUIST was the third son of a family of ten children, all sons, a large family for the parents who were in but moderate circumstances, to support. For this reason he was early in life thrown on his own resources. At sixteen years of age, he chose cabinet making for his trade, which he followed during his life in Sweden. He was married in 1845 to JOHANA NORDSTROM and to this union were given six children, five sons and one daughter, one son dying in childhood; the rest all living to mourn the death of their father. In 1870, together with his family, emigrated to America, landing in New York, May 1, 1870 and coming direct to Burlington, Iowa where two of his sons who had emigrated the year previous, were living. Two years later he settled on a small farm in Benton Township, Lucas County, which was his home for twenty years. By strict economy and simple life, the new world afforded a more favorable livelihood and while the native land was dear to his memory, he !
always expressed himself thankful for having made the choice for himself and for his family in the far western country. He lived to the ripe age of 84 years, lacking seven days.
