He served during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany. James started dating Beverly Pierce in high school and they were married September 5, 1952. They were blessed with three daughters, Wendy, Terry and Cindy.

James enjoyed collecting. He collected guns, coins, Gene Autry memorabilia and loved collecting tractors. He went to many tractor pulls and always enjoyed local parades and rides.

James was a man of many talents. He could fix anything around the home or farm. He was very proud of Russell and volunteered his time and talents; serving as vice-president of the Russell Museum, a member of the Russell Town Band and a member, deacon, choir director and trustee of the First Baptist Church. He especially enjoyed singing in a quartet and at his church.

His girls remember many family vacations, especailly the trip to Yellowstone with all five of them riding in the front of a pick-up. They camped at the Iowa State Fair every year from 1956 until 2011. James was always close to his family, spending time with them and enjoying simple pleasures that life offered. He often enjoyed a game of chess with brother, Burton.

James passed away on December 23, 2012 at the age of 81 years. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Burton Werts and Mary Lee Werts; and a great-grandson, Max Sander.
