Ed was born August 30, 1919 on the family farm just north of Chariton to Roy and Agnes Stoops Hayes. He attended country school and then Chariton High School. He worked with his father in the coalmines and then in the CCC for two years, and later helped build Highway 14 north of Chariton.

Ed married Betty Homsher on May 3, 1941 in Princeton, Missouri. They were blessed with three children: Linda, Cathy, and Ron.

Ed was an Army Veteran of WWII serving in the 168 Infantry 34th Division in Northern Africa from 1941 until 1945. The Germans took his company prisoner and he spent 26 months in a prisoner of war camp in Germany. After coming home from the war he seen his three year old daughter for the first time.

He worked at Steinbach Locker, Solar Aircraft in Des Moines, and then worked for 25 years at the Hy-Vee Distribution Center in Chariton.

Ed left a legacy to his family of being honest and fair, and dedicated to his family. He loved to see his grandchildren, watching and discussing the Iowa Hawkeye's, tinkering in his workshop, and fixing many things. He was a member of the American Legion.

Ed passed away at his home on Sunday, July 25, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Betty; his children: Linda (Ray) Homan of Des Moines, Cathy (Harold) Clark of Chariton, and Ron Hayes of Chariton; 10 grandchildren: Jean, Jim, Christine, Aaron, June, Daisie, Joe, Carrie, Buck, and Jason; 9 great grandchildren; a great great grandson; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Ed was preceded in death by siblings: Harold, Mabel Davison, Dorothy Cook, Ronald, Dwight, and Glenn. ~ The Pierschbacher Funeral Home, Chariton, Iowa July 2010.
