Hass, Nancy Berniece Shelton 1916-2012

Nancy Berniece Shelton Crawford Hass passed away on Friday, November 2, 2012 at the Chariton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Chariton, Iowa.

She was born on September 21, 1916 in rural Lucas County to Ray and Carrie (Haltom) Shelton.

She attended a one room school in Lucas County, and the Norwood High School.

She married Brice Crawford and to this union one son, Donald, was born.

Brice passed away in 1942.

Berniece lived in rural Lucas County until she moved to Chariton where she worked at the sewing factory and the Ben Franklin dime store.

She married Dr. C. S. Hass of Chariton in 1956, and to this union 2 daughters were born, Carol and Karen.

Sumner and Berniece raised their girls in the same house that Sumner himself had grown up in.

Berniece always worked hard to take care of her family and every Saturday she would bake fresh bread from scratch.

Both of her girls got to help her bake everything from breads and pies to cookies and cakes.

Berniece was also quite a seamstress and she and Carol even took some sewing classes together when they got a new Elna sewing machine.

Preceeding her death were her husband, Charles S. Hass, her parents and 2 infant siblings.

She is survived by her children, Donald and his wife Frances Crawford of rural Lucas, Carol and her husband Dave Peregoy of Denver, Colorado, Karen Hass of Albia, her sister Wilma Shelton of Chariton and brother Vernon and his wife Thelma Shelton of Clive.

Grandchildren; Debra and her husband Randy Foster of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Lisa and her husband Bill Elson of Ankeny, Iowa.

Great Grandchildren; Brandt and his wife Lindsey Foster of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Alex Foster of Urbandale and Sydney and Lydia Elson of Ankeny, Iowa, plus two nieces and 1 nephew. ~ The Des Moines Register, Des Moines, Iowa Sun 4 Nov 2012.
