WILLIAM CANON BUTCHER

William Canon Butcher was born June 11, 1845, in Monroe county, Indiana and died August 17, 1922, at his home in Chariton, Iowa. His age was 77 years, 2 months.

He came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Butcher to Monroe county, Iowa, when about three years of age. The country then was new, his father being the sixth voter in the township. He was married to Netier E. Harter September 2, 1866. To them were born two children, a daughter, who died when two years old and a son, J.S. Butcher, of Sidney, Iowa, who has been present during his father's sickness.

He and his young wife moved to a farm in Cedar township, Lucas county, in the spring of 1871, and they have lived in Lucas county almost fifty-two years. They have lived in the same house in Chariton for 22 years.

Besides the wife and son, he is survived by four grandchildren, three boys and one girl, the children of Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Butcher; also three sisters, Mrs. Catherine Strieff, Mrs. Jane Edwards and Mrs. Mary Nedderman, all of Lovilia.

Six years ago the second day of this coming September, their friends celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary and it was a happy occassion. He and his wife have lived happy together a long time. They have been honest in business, were industrious in habits and were good neighbors. In the community work, in church business, he filled the place exceptionally well and was a good helper in any cause.

In all his long life he was hardly ever sick, not having to be waited on for 52 years. He was confined to his bed a little less than a month. He seemed to not suffer much, but gradually grew weaker till the end came. In answer to the question, "will you trust in Jesus?" he said, "I will try to!" How much these words may have meant: and in these last days when his eyes were turned to eternity we trust they were turned to HIM who said, Look unto Me and be ye saved.

His companion will miss him more than pen or tongue can tell, but the love of friends and kindred will comfort her and Jesus will never forget to support and comfort always.

The funeral services were conducted by E.W. Curtis from the residence on Saturday at 2 p.m. and interment was in the Bethel cemetery.
