Funeral services for Willard Hawkins, 98, of Chariton, will be Thursday, January 3 at 10:30 a.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton. No visitation is planned. Interment will be in the Chariton Cemetery.

Willard Noah Hawkins, eldest son of James Logan and Bertha Tuttle Hawkins was born October 19, 1909 in Wayne County, Iowa. He passed away at home in Chariton on December 31, 2007. His early years were spent on the home farm. He attended a rural school and then went to Cambria when the school consolidated. He graduated from Cambria High School.

He worked at various jobs during his lifetime including the construction of ammunition bunkers in the Scottsbluff, Nebraska area, as well as a railroad westward. Later he was employed as a ship fitter in the California shipyards. After the war he was employed on a large ranch in California where pears and English Walnuts were raised as well as livestock.

When he returned home to Iowa, he farmed, always helping others along the way. He could be depended on when anyone needed help. He spent many hours helping family members as well as neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Marjorie Watson and Wilma Coddington; three brothers: Armour, Morgan, and Walter.

Willard is survived by five sisters and a brother; many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
