From the Chariton Herald-Patriot of October 2, 1913

William L. Smith was born in Mt. Pleasant, Morland county, Penn., August 9th, 1822, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clara Heaton of Osgood, Mo., September 22, 1913, aged ninety-one years, one month and thirteen days. He was married to Mary A. Foutch March 30, 1852. To this union were born seven children, five daughters and two sons. The mother died October 9, 1873, and three daughters have since passed away. He leaves to mourn his departure two daughters and two sons, eighteen grandchildren and thirty-seven great grandchildren.

He united with the Methodist Episcopal church when a young man and continued a member of the same until his death. The funeral service was held in the M. E. church at Derby on Wednesday, September 24th. Rev. E. L. Stone had charge of the service. The body was laid to rest in the Humeston cemtery.
