Chariton Leader of Sept 22, 1998

Erma M. George was born on a farm near Derby on January 8, 1896, to William and Rosa Belle Rash. She departed this life at the age of 102 years on Sept 12, 1998 at the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center.

Erma was married to Homer George on March 9, 1921. No children were born to this union.

They lived in Derby where Homer was a blacksmith and Erma continued to live there after his death. Her health failed in 1986 and she moved to the Northridge Living Center in Chariton. She enjoyed her time spent there but during her last years Erma was confined to the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center after suffering a broken hip.

Erma was an active member of the Derby Presbyterian Church until it closed. She was a homemaker and enjoyed making some beautiful quilts.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters and one half-brother.

Erma is survived by several nieces and nephews and will be missed by them all.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998, at the Derby Cemetery. Pastor Russell Farrell officiated. Bill Jones, Pearl Teater, Ross Cochran and John Farrell served as bearers. Memorials may be made in her name to the Derby Community Center. Fielding Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Emma George celebrated her 100th birthday on Jan. 8 at the Chariton Manor where she resides. She received a large number of birthday greetings which she enjoyed. A small group of invited relatives and friends attended the party, hosted by her nieces Virginia Mart and Freida Cochran of Humeston.

The resident of the month is Erma George. Erma was born Jan. 8, 1896, near Hazel Del School in rural Derby. She had three sisters and one half-brother. She attended rural school near her home. She and her husband moved to Derby after their marriage. He was a blacksmith for many years. Quilting, Ladies Aide and the Derby Presbyterian Church were some of the activities she enjoyed. Erma moved to Northridge in 1986 and came to the Manor in April of 1995. She participates in active games, bingo, socials and religious events. Erma enjoys being 100 years of age and she enjoys visiting with others.
