The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, April 16, 1908The following, concerning Chariton people, was clipped from the Daily
Times-Union, published at Jacksonville, Florida:Orlando, Fla. 9, April. -- There are often illustrations of the
miscalculations of human kind in the business and social world in this age
where fortunes are suddenly made and lost; where the affluent of today may
be the beggar of tomorrow and visa versa. The social lions fall from
idolization of a sudden and the obscure are placed upon the pedestal of
popular favor. Thus we reason that this is a fickle old world filled with
very foolish people and after all few of us select real merit outside the
fascinating glitter of gold and are prone to worship at the shrine of the
gaudy fictitions rather than the unassuming genuine. But this is no
arraignment of persons who have met financial loss or of those who have made
pecuniary successes. An illustration of lost fortunes comes under your correspondent's
observation in the persons of two ladies who came here last fall -- an
elderly lady, MRS. MALLORY -- a name familiar to the citizens of Florida --
and her daughter, MRS. THAYER. It seems that they had been on a tour across
the waters and on reaching home found their fortunes broken by the
defalcations of trusted friends. Reports say that these losses amounted up
into hundreds of thousands of dollars and that many suits have been brought
against them in the United States courts on account of some illegal bank
transactions which they must meet. These things have been discussed here
owing to the filtering rumors but the real facts are unknown, though, with
it all, some great calamity must have overtaken them owing to their demeanor
and reticent caution in their converse over personal affairs. It is said
they have a palatial residence in their Iowa town but their changed
financial condition made their former association irksome, so they sought
this soothing health resort as a temporary solace, choosing to live a simple
quiet life during their temporary stay. The elder of the ladies is broken
in health and is calmly reserved when met. Ruth never administered to the
wants of Naomi with more patient devotion than is bestowed by the younger
lady upon her mother. Sometimes they speak of the north but it is ever with
a sense of sadness and if they have intentions of returning they have
communicated it to no one here. Their general demeanor has created an
interest, although MRS. THAYER perhaps has been of a more commanding and
hautier nature than she exhibits at present, so theirs is written down among
the pathetic experiences which bow to humility, although no evidences go to
show that they are in other than easy financial circumstances. Still there
must be the weight of some great burden on their minds.
