The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, February 6, 1908In times of business depression enterprises that will not only keep the
money at home but also bring in the cash from outside sources, can be
appreciated and their influence felt. Had Chariton more establishments of
this character the money would flow in from a distance and relieve the
shortage. Traffic among ourselves may adjust the money supply already on
hands, but it is not calculated to replenish. J.H. CURTIS, who makes the
famous Chariton broom which wipes the cob webs from the world at large
informs the Leader that had he the capacity for manufacturing he could
supply almost double the output, such is the present demand, with but a
slight cost above the present selling effort. PETE T. PATTON conducts a
cigar manufactory at Chariton and his goods have a good reputation and are
equal if not superior to many other brands that are pushed out. His is a
legitimate and an established business and has a much under estimated
influence in local commercial affairs, but were his pay rolls to be called
off certainly it would be locally felt. This is another magnet to draw
dollars from a distance. The SCHREIBER Wagon and Carriage Works is an industry that is reaching out
in the distances and has more than a local importance. The class of goods
put out has established merit and a dozen vehicles bearing the SCHREIBER
brand ought to be wheeling over the Iowa roads to where there is now one. Then there is the Iron Works and Foundry of the JOHNSON BROS. This firm
employs several hands which means a number of families to be supplied by the
Chariton stores. Each of the named institutions are worthy the full measure
of encouragement and when meetings of business men are to be held plans for
the enlargement of these industries and the establishment of industries in
other lines should primarily be considered. They are the real business
magnets.
