The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, January 2, 1908AMANDA B. ANDERSON was before the commission, Friday, and was adjudged
mentally unbalanced. Her condition was such that it was deemed necessary to
take her to the hospital at Clarinda for treatment. She is the wife of
FRANK ANDERSON, a Swedish gentleman residing several miles north of Chariton
is 43 years of age and they have a family of small children. By hard work
and frugality they had secured a small farm and had saved up money
sufficient to build a new house and were expecting soon to enjoy some of the
more modern comforts of life, but like many others their funds had been
placed in the First national Bank for safe keeping and they lost it. Worry
over this was the principal cause of her dethroned reason. Sheriff
Gittinger took her to Clarinda, returning home on Saturday. This is the
first sequel of the kind yet reported and the misery caused by this
wholesale defalcation cannot be estimated. This good woman had planned and
helped save that the family might enjoy the fruits of their toil only to be
overwhelmed by disappointment. There surely is pathos in this and justice
cries out against such wrong.
