THEY LOOK ALIKE -- MCAFEE & SMITH

MCAFEE, SMITH

The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa

It is said that everyone has his double. this may be the case or it may not
be but often it is true. There is a remarkable resemblance between ALBERT P
MCAFEE, of Pleasant Township, and DR. SMITH, of Columbia. They are often
taken for the same person by those of fairly good acquaintance. Both
gentlemen were at Belinda at the celebration on the fourth of July and if
they were entrusted with confidences it was neither's fault -- they can't
help but look alike. This resemblance causes the gentlemen many amusing
experiences, and it is said that once a person mistook MR. MCAFEE for DR.
SMITH and became hostile because he refused to attend a small pox patient --
but the Doctor was innocent in his alibi and his double did a kindness by
not exposing him to the contagion. MR. MCAFEE is a pedagogue by profession
and when DR. SMITH was mistakenly approached by a fond mother with a
blooming young daughter and asked what course of mental stimulants she ought
to take he innocently replied that the daughter didn't look crazy, but if
she was slightly off his advice would be, as a physician, to take no medical
stimulant at all but to watch her carefully and if she showed a destructive
tendency to call in the commission of insanity and have her consigned
immediately. It can readily be understood why these frequent cases of
mistaken identity cause each other injustice and embarrassing explanations,
as each gentleman is most kindly disposed and would not for all the gold of
Ophir be guilty of giving other than a courteous answer. If one or the
other of them doesn't move out of the neighborhood, they may have to resort
to some placard scheme like the following:

"My name is Smith, not McAfee,
(Or visa versa, as the case may be,)
So, should you the other, wish to see,
Go hunt him up -- he looks like me."
