GEO. W. PICKEREL and MRS. LORA E. BELL, both of this city, were joined in
the bonds of matrimony on Wednesday evening, the consummation of a happy
courtship and the event caused but little surprise to their friends, who had
been expecting the marriage for some time. The couple are well and
favorably known in Chariton where they have resided for several years.

MR. PICKEREL formerly residing at LaGrange, but since disposing of his farm
has been engaged in business of various kinds in Chariton. They are a most
worthy couple and all hope their journey along the causeway of this mundane
sphere will be a tranquil one and strewn with the flowers of prosperity.

The marriage was solemnized at the M.E. Parsonage, Rev. N. Evans officiating
After a short wedding trip they will settle down to housekeeping in
Chariton.

' Worse Than Charavaries'

The old fashioned charavari may belong to a semi-barbaric age but the custom
in refined society of showering newly wedded people with rice and tying old
shoes to their trunks on the eve of their wedding trips, may or may not bear
investigation. On Tuesday (sic) evening, after the marriage of MR. GEORGE
PICKEREL and MRS. LORA BELL, when they started to Des Moines, they not only
were the recipients of these favors, but the following handbill flooded the
trains and depots, "for the information of the public," Of course the bridal
party were supposed to enter into the spirit of the occasion and enjoy the
fun:

"Warning! Confidence man has eloped with a Society Bell. No reward is
offered but the public is warned to look out for them. Special Megaphone
Message to all: Chariton, Iowa, June 19, 1907. -- Local police report that
GEORGE W. PICKEREL, a well known western crook, was married some time today
to MRS. LORA BELL, a charming lady of this city. PICK is a short portly
fellow, and a smooth guy. When last seen had on a hat, a pari of shoes, a
collar, and a pair of Boston garters. It was also learned that he belonged
to the Union. PICK is a pugilist by birth so do not attempt any familiarity
but LORA is timid and any consolation will help her."

Everyone understood that it was simply a "wedding joke," and all attention
was turned to them, somewhat embarrassing, nevertheless. As MR. and MRS.
PICKEREL are of our best people they received the hearty congratulations of
a wide circle of acquaintances.
