The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, April 4, 1907

MRS. J.F. SMITH, daughter of the late Gov. L.S. BESTOW, arrived in Chariton,
a few days since, to settle up some business affairs. She owned the
residence place in which MR. BESTOW lived and it was advertised for sale but
the transfer has been made, contrary to what was expected. It is a well
known fact that MISS HELEN HETTINGER has been with the BESTOW family for
fifty years and has been loyal and true. MRS. SMITH recognized this and
presented her with a deed to the property and included all the contents and
furniture. It is now hers to do with what she wills. MRS. SMITH said she
was entitled to a good home and she was glad to see her comfortably fixed in
her declining years. She can visit among her friends and have a place to
return to. This gift amounts to between $4,000 and $5,000 and is a new
evidence of the BESTOW character. MRS. SMITH was in Florida when her father
died, and has just returned.
