MALONEY, STEVENS

The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, December 27, 1906

On Saturday night, MRS. PETE MALONEY took passage on train No. 2 at Chariton
for her home at Melrose, but on reaching that station had dozed into sleep
and the train men had neglected to arouse her. When she suddenly awoke the
train was in full speed about two miles east of the station, but she,
thinking it had only started, undertook to land from it, meeting almost
instant death. She had been to Indianola to see her daughter, MRS. GEORGE
STEVENS, who is serving a six months' sentence in jail for shop lifting, one
month of the sentence having expired. She was paroled, however, to attend
her mother's funeral. Her husband, GEORGE STEVENS, is an inmate of the
penitentiary, so it seems to be an ill fated family. But this is not all.
The pastor of the Melrose M.E. Church resides at Iconium, a point on the
charge, and was notified to conduct the funeral of the deceased lady. He
started over to Melrose and while on the road his team took affright, ran
away and demolished things generally. The preacher sustained two broken
legs and other more or less serious injuries. Thus it was a sad Christmas
for all who were connected with the ill fated lady.
