Hi Judy,

My husband's great grandfather was named Joseph McCleary but he was born at a later time. Shoot!

Looking at scanned documents on Ancestry.com, the the 1850 Federal Census shows Joseph M. McLary, 6 yrs old, living with the family of Gary Smith and Nancy Smith. They also had Racael Bedwell 5 yrs old. They are found living in Concord Twp, Louisa Co., IA

Pure speculation: Nancy Smith might of been married a couple of times. (As in that time period, a widow with young children really needed a male provider. As a widower need a woman to take care of his household.)

As to your question for birth records, in Iowa - births were not recorded until July 1880.

The puzzle continues..... Wish I could be of better help.
