My Finley ancestors came from Blount County ca 1840 to Lee County, Iowa. John and Edie Saffell Finley were married in Blount County and died in Lee County, John dying when several sons were away at the Civil War. After the Civil War some of the boys came to Louisa County. John's brother, Robert wrote a will in 1843 shortly before he died in Lee County, and listed his wife as Mary, and two daughters,Margaret & (can't recall name now), who were to go to a brother-in-law John Duncan of Louisa county and a Catherine Johnson of Louisia County upon the death of he and his wife. He leaves some of his estate to nephew David Finley and brother John Finley. Apparently the girls stayed in Lee County, as they are listed as heirs in John Finley's estate. I have long searched for the Duncan family in an effort to learn the maiden name of his wife Mary. Robert also mentioned his sister Thankful as well as names of McCulley and Doak. I had corresponded several years ago with a professional Finley genealogist Carmen Finley, but she was unable to determine where our branch fit in, but did include our information in her book "John Finley of Sonoma County, California" a copy of which I have at home.
One of John and Edie's sons was Samuel Saffell Finley, who would be my 2nd great grandfather.
I have listed some of the our Finley family obits on this site. I am in Florida at the time and don't have most of my research with me. We plan to return to Burlington, Iowa the first of April, and would like to continue this correspondence. I have left some pages and a CD of the Finleys at the museum at Wapello, if you want to check there before I get home. I have one aunt living yet in Louisa County - Betty Perkins, widow of Les Perkins, who was my father's brother. Please let me know if you are interested and/or have any information that would help me. Thanks, Celia Crawford
