Page 1Joseph F. Johnson, for many years a resident of Wapello township, died at his home in Oakville, February 20, aged 69 hears. Mr. Johnson was born in Rockingham county, Virginia, July 18, 1840. Deceased lived in Virginia until 1869. During this time he had grown to manhood and married. At the breaking out of the civil was he was one of the first to answer the call by the Confederacy, and enlisted in the Tenth Virginia Calvary in April, 1861, serving until the close of the war in 1865.
He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Long on April 24, 1864. To them were born six children, two of whom with the wife and mother are left to mourn his death. Two died in infancy, and Elmer at the age of 19 years and Tola at the age of 23 years. The two living are Mrs. J. L. Packwood, of Marchfield, Mo. and Orson P., of Elrick, Iowa. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Lucy Randall and one brother, S. R., both of Mound City , Mo. The funeral service was held from the Fairview church Tuesday at 11 o'clock a. m., conducted by Rev. G. M. Peck. Interment at Fairview near his old home.
