George L. Van Auken, a veteran of the civil war, died at his home in Columbus Junction Sunday morning, in his 66th years. He was born in Huron county, Ohio, Sept. 2, 1844. He moved to Iowa about 35 years ago, living in or near Columbus Junction, where he had worked at his shoemaker's trade. He was city marshal for a number of years and also served a year as guard at the while House in Washington, D. C. At the breaking out of the civil war he enlisted in Co. F, Ninth Indiana infantry. He was engaged in 32 hot fought battles, being wounded in the battle of Stone rivet. The funeral was held Tuesday conducted by Rev. Foster, of the Reformed church, of which he was a member. Interment in the Columbus City cemetery.
