Joseph Edmond McLaughlin was born May 19, 1880, in Des Moines county, Iowa, and died at the home of his parents in Wapello, at 4 o'clock a. m., July 7, 1909, age 29 years, 1 months and 18 days. He was educated in the rural school and at the high school in Wapello, he graduated in 1901. Following his graduation he entered the law department of the State University at Iowa City, from which he graduated in 1905. Shortly after leaving the University he located at Sulphur, Okla, in the practice of law. He rose rapidly in his professions and soon doing a large business. Besides his regular work he was employed as an attorney for the Santa Fe and Frisco System.

He was modest, manly, honest, upright and worthy of the regard of his friends. His constitution was not robust and too steady application to his professional duties, under some unfavorable climatic conditions caused a decline in his health. Early this spring he was compelled to give up his work and came home for a vacation. His family and friends were shocked by his condition. Not improving, about two months ago he, with his mother, went to Farwell, Texas, where he seemed to gain slightly. The improvement was not permanent. A month ago his father went to Farwell and took him to Albuquerque, New Mexico. He continued to fail rapidly, and was brought home to die, just a week before his final summons.

He leaves, besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. McLaughlin, of this place, five brothers and one sister as follows: William L., Chas. E., John M., Thos. F., Jas. D., and Mary Teresa; besides a large circle of friends. The funeral will be held at the Catholic church tomorrow (Friday) at 10 o'clock, conducted by Father Houser, of Sigourney. The remains will be taken to Dodgeville on the 12:40 passenger, where interment will be made in the family lot.
