Page 1(Sprinkle) Mary Esther Johnson was born in Spottsylvania county, Pa., in the year 1828 and died at her home near Elrick Junction June 17th, 1909, aged 80 years, 7 months, and 4 days. She was married to John Sprinkle in Lockingham county, Va., April 12, 1849. To them were born fourteen children, of whom seven sons, Erasmus, Melvin, Frank, Edwin, Charles, Millard and Calvin and two daughters, Mrs. Alice Dotson and Mrs. Emma Huff, remain to mourn the loss of a loving mother. She also leaves thirteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. Her companion preceded her in death just one year, six months and two days.
Mr. and Mrs. Sprinkle came to Iowa in the fall of 1854, driving through in a covered wagon and were forty days on the road. Crossing the river at Burlington in the month of November they came on to Wapello where they made their home for four years. Mr. Sprinkle working at his trade of blacksmithing. They then moved to the farm which has since been their home. Mother Sprinkle was converted to God in the year 1870 in the Palo Alto school house. She at once united with the Methodist Protestant church of which she remained a member for 38 years. The funeral services were held at the Fairview church June 20 at 11 a. m., conducted by Rev. J. E. Newsom. Interment was in the Fairview cemetery.
