John H. Lucas, died Tuesday morning, March 21, 1905, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Engerson, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The deceased was born in the county of Cork, Ireland, in the year 1815, and came to America in 1848. John H. Lucas and Miss Hanora Daily were married at Cincinnati, Ohio, in the year 1850, and came to Wapello, Iowa, in the year 1855. To this union five children were born, two of whom, a son and a daughter, died in infancy. The mother died on May 15, 1863. The children living are Mrs. Mary Engerson, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mrs. Hattie Stockton, of Spokane, Washington and Mrs. Margaret Mathews, of West Union, Ia.

Mr. Lucas will be remembered by all the old settlers living here in the fifties, as a prominent railroad contractor and superintendent, being associated with Chase & Sawyer in the construction of the old Air Line Railway. On his declining years Mr. Lucas made his home with his oldest daughter. She and her husband did everything that could be done to make life pleasant during the time he permitted to remain with them. After death brought his remains back to his old home and placed them beside the wife and mother in the Wapello cemetery.
