Death once more has taken away one of the early settlers of this county, who has resided in the state for more than a half century in the person of Abner Ball, who died at his home six miles northwest of this city, March 11 after an illness covering several weeks. Deceased was born October 24, 1832, at Connersville, Ind., and was at the time of his death aged 71 years, 6 months and 17 days. He came to Iowa in the year 1853 and was wedded to Mary Jane Wykert the following year. To them were born four boys, on dying in infancy and another at the age of seven years. The two sons living are Almond T., and John M. After living with his wife for twenty-four, she departed this life in 1878.

Two years later Mr. Ball was again married, this time to Almeda Huffman, a daughter of the late Mrs. Caroline Huffman. This union was blessed with three children Alvah, Ruth and Wilbur. Ruth dying at the age of two years. Besides the immediate family there is left to mourn one full sister, Mrs. Amzi Donaldson, and a half sister, Mrs. John Wykert, both residents of this county, two half brothers, William and Samuel, are residents of Ludlow, Kansas.

Mr. Ball was one of the early settler of this part of Iowa. He united with the Christian church when eighteen years of age and lived a true life. He was a good husband, kind father and honored neighbor. The funeral services were held at the Long Creek church conducted by Rev. W. C. Shultze, pastor of the German M. E. church of Wapello, Sunday afternoon, interment occurred in the Long Creek cemetery.
