John Chown passed away at his home in Columbus Junction Monday, February 15, at 11:30 a. m. He was born in Devonshire, England, January 11, 1820, where on July 5, 1843, he was married to Miss Eliza Aplin and together soon after they came to America. They lived for a time in Virginia and afterwards at Zanesville, Ohio, coming to Iowa in 1856. They settled in Lake township in Muscatine county, which was their home for a number of years. In 1874, Mrs. Chown died and her husband then lived with his children until a year ago when he established his own home in Columbus Junction with a married daughter, Mrs. Breckenridge, as housekeeper. His illness was of about ten days duration. Mr. Chown was the father of eleven children, only four of whom survive him. These are, Louis Chown and Mrs. Mary Fister, of Nichols and George and Mrs. Eliza Breckenridge of Columbus Junction. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the home, interment in High Prairie Chapel, Muscatine county.
