William Brogan was born in Holmes county, Ohio, June 27, 1827, and died at his home in Wapello township, January 10, 1904, aged 76 years, 6 months and 13 days. He came to Iowa and settled in this county in February, 1839. He was married March 4, 1864, to Miss Lucinda Bayne. To this union were born eight children, five of whom are still living, Ida, wife of Ira Vansickle; Candace, wife of Michael Downey; James, Anna and George, who are yet single. Mrs. Brogan died March 7, 1870 leaving a family of very small children for the husband to care for. In caring for them as he did he deserves the praise and esteem of every citizen and the blessings of his children, who have become useful members of society.

Besides the children, deceased leaves two brothers and one sister. During the 65 years of his residence in this county his labors have been almost unceasing and he has done much work of transforming the wild land into the beautiful farms for which this county is noted. His honesty combined with that energy which characterized all his actions has enabled him to add to his possessions from year to year until he became the owner of a fine farm and home. He was a successful life and in death of this honored pioneer Louisa county has lost one of its bet citizens.
