Joseph Trimble Cowles was born in Belmont county, Ohio, June 5th, 1826, and died at his home in Louisa county, Iowa, December 5th, 1903, aged 77 years and 6 months. The deceased moved from Ohio to Iowa in 1840 with his parents, the family settling at West Point, in Lee county. His father, Rev. Salmon Cowles, was one of the earliest Presbyterian ministers to reach the state.

Mr. Cowles was married twice, first at West Point on October 2, 1851 to Miss Elizabeth Chapman, who fell asleep in Jesus January 30, 1883. To this union were born four children, on passing away in infancy and three survived the father, one son and two daughters, A. E. Coles and Mrs. Laura A. Blanchet, of Pendleton, Oregon and Jennie, wife of W. J. Grimm, of this county. Mr. and Mrs. Cowles removed from West Point to Louisa county in 1854. On February 10, 1887, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Delia A. Hupp, of this county, who still survives him.

He united with the Presbyterian church at West Point when but twenty-five years of age. He was one of the charter members of the Oakland Presbyterian church and a ruling elder for many years and has left us a record of a blameless life and a character above reproach.
