Monday morning news rapidly spread over the city that Ed. K. Hurley had been suddenly killed by the accidental discharge of a repeating shotgun he was engaged in cleaning. Mrs. Hurley was away from home visiting her parents in Mt. Pleasant, and the awful news was immediately communicated to her and likewise to his brother and sister in Denver, Colo. The accident happened about 7:30 o'clock in the morning. Mr. Hurley had shortly before been up town for his mail and on reaching home took his rifle and shotgun out doors on the north side of the house to clean them. He had finished cleaning and oiling the rifle and set it up against the house and took up the shotgun to clean it, when in some unaccountable manner the gun was discharged. The contents penetrated his heart and death was instantaneous. Mr. Grimes was called immediately, but the unfortunate fellow was beyond human aid.

An examination of the gun, which was a Marilu showed an empty cartridge in the chamber and a loaded shell in the magazine. He evidently was not aware that the gun was loaded and in some manned struck the hammer on the edge of a low porch beside which he was standing. The charge went straight into the body, which would indicate he was either bending over the gun or pulling it toward him.

The deceased was born in Wapello May 26th, 1863, which would make him 40 years and 12 days old. He had lived her all his life and was will known by everybody and had a large circle of friends. He was married October 22, 1902 to Miss Mabel Arnold, of Mt. Pleasant and they left shortly afterwards for Florida, where they spent the winter, returning to Wapello about two weeks ago. Besides the wife of a few months, there is left to mourn his untimely death, the mother, two sisters, Alice and Florence, and three brothers, Winfield, Aaron and David, besides numerous other relatives. The funeral was held from his late home yesterday afternoon at 2:30. Rev. Reusch offered prayer and the Mason conducted their funeral service. At the cemetery the Mason conducted their burial service.
