Ray Harrison Smith, son of Charles and Sophronia Smith, died in Wapello, Iowa, February 27, 1897, aged eight years and six months. He was born in Cairo, Iowa, August 27, 1888. This is the second child taken from this family since they came here last fall. Little Ray was a delicate, bright, affectionate child. He took more than childish interest in his own case. He wanted to know what each kind of medicine was for. He was interested in knowing just his temperature when the doctor called only the night before he died. He was indeed hopeful, brave, patient to the last. The funeral was preached by Rev. Wm Semones at Cairo in the presence of a large company of neighbors and friends.
