Rachel Mathews Higbee, wife of Joseph Higbee, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. A. Miller, in Marshall township this county, Jany. 15, 1891, aged 78 years, dying on her birthday, The funeral services were held at Cairo on the following day, conducted by Rev. D. T. Campbell of Morning Sun and her remains were laid to rest in the Cairo Cemetery. She had born to her 15 children 9 of whom are living. Besides her husband and 9 children she leaves 66 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Mrs. Higbee was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, Jany 15, 1813.

She was married to Joseph Higbee at the early age of sixteen and in 1836 with her husband came to Iowa, then a territory and settled on the same piece of land which her husband converted into a comfortable home, on which she died. At an early age she united with the Christian church and through a long life maintained the integrity of her faith. She belonged to that noble band of wives and mothers, who for love's sake, the sake of others, surrendered ease, risked life to lay the foundations of a home in the then wilderness but now fair state. Another pioneer has been called to her rest and her reward.
