The citizens of Wapello were surprised and shocked to learn Tuesday morning of the death of Mrs. Samuel Clifton. She with her husband visited their daughter in Burlington Christmas, returning the following evening. The next morning she was quite unwell, and continued to grow weaker until last Monday morning when we began to sink rapidly and died the following morning. Ann Bull was born in Leicoster, England, March 19, 1820 and was married to Samuel Clifton in 1852, and with her husband came to this country in 1857, settling in Eliot township, this county, where they continued to live until coming to Wapello several years ago. She had born to her three children, two sons and one daughter, the daughter only surviving her.

Mrs. Clifton united with the Baptist church when but 17 years of age, and continued a faithful and consistent member of that denomination until after coming to this country, when she united with the Presbyterian order. Mrs. Clifton was a lady of quiet, gentle manners, kind and obliging and with a reserved dignified bearing. She will be missed and mourned by a large circle of friends besides an aged husband and a daughter, Mrs. George Graham. The funeral services were conducted at the M. E. church by Rev. Goodrich Wednesday afternoon and the remains were laid to rest in the Wapello cemetery.
