Mr. Geo L. Coe departed this life Sept. 4th, 1890. He was born Sept. 27th, 1801, in Paris, Oneida county, N. Y. He was an aspiring and resolute spirit which could not be content with life made to order about him, where the only thing for him to do was to fit in, consequently he sought the west in his early days. He went to Iowa in 1839, he entered into the political and religious life of the territory and became one of the leaders in building and perpetuating those institutions which made it one of the grandest of our commonwealths. He sat for nine years as judge upon the bench and worked his life into the fabric which made statehood possible and desirable. He organized the first Agricultural Society.

Twenty-five years ago he came to this county where he has lived in quietness, beloved by all who knew him. For the last ten years he has lived with his wife, who survives him, in the home of his daughter. The funeral was held at his late home on the 6th inst, his pastor, Rev. C. H. Rogers, of the Congregational church, of which he had long been a member officiating.
