Sunday morning the message was carried from home to home of the death of Max Woodruff, at the Bellevue hospital at Muscatine, Saturday evening at 9:45 after an illness of six weeks duration most of which had been spent at the hospital. Death was due to a lesion of the heart following an operation he underwent four weeks ago for an infection of the bone of the leg. Member of the senior class of the Columbus high school, captain of the high school football team and leader in basket ball and other athletic contests, Max Woodruff was one of the most admired students enrolled at the local high school. He was regarded by local and outside critics as one of the best high school athletes in southeastern Iowa. About six weeks ago a boil developed on his left elbow and though quite painful he continued to practice with the team and played in the game at Winfield. A few days afterwards he was not feeling well and went home from school with a fever which was given prompt medical attention. In a few days infection developed in his right leg below the knee, a condition which demanded an immediate operation and he was taken to Bellevue hospital. For several weeks his condition improved steadily and he seemed to be on the road to recovery until leakage developed in the valves of the heart and infection developed in his foot.

Max Woodruff was born at Louisa Center in this county, July 21, 1904 and soon afterwards moved with his parents to the home southwest of this city. He was the youngest of a family of nine children. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Woodruff; five sisters, Mrs. L. L. Ballentine of Waterloo; Mrs. A. A. Ballentine and Mrs. H. T. Kruger, of Cedar Falls; Mrs. John H. Hanft, of Columbus City and Miss Claire Everett Woodruff, of this city and Almon Woodruff, of Columbus City. One sister, Mabel preceded him in death about twenty years ago at the age of fifteen.

The funeral services were held in the auditorium of the Columbus high school Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock. The entire high school also members of the seventh and eighth grades attended in a body. The services were in charge of the pastors of the local churches, Rev. Ruston, of the Presbyterian church, preaching the funeral sermon, Rev. Dillon, of the Methodist church reading the scripture lesson, Rev. Riddington of the Louisa Center Baptist church, offering prayer and Rev. Jamieson, of the United Presbyterian church, paying tribute to his life calling attention to his manly Christian characteristics. Interment was made in the Columbus City cemetery.
