John Bond, a well known and highly esteemed resident of Columbus City for many years, was instantly killed Friday morning of last week when he was struck by Rock Island passenger train No. 63, the early morning north bound train, while he was walking south on the track near the home of Mr. and Mrs. Web Newton. Mr. Bond, who was a carpenter by trade, planned to spend the day fishing and as the train was nearly an hour late, it is supposed that he walked down the track with his mind engrossed on the fishing trip and with his hearing not good failed to hear the rumble of the train. The track is visible here for some distance and the fireman and engineer saw him walking down the track but supposed that he would step to the side. Instead of stepping from the track he apparently became confused and before realizing the danger the engine struck him. The train stopped and Dr. Lewis who was a passenger rushed to his assistance but nothing could be done for him.

John Powell Bond was born at Dayton, Ohio, March 27, 1857 and came to Columbus Junction when a small boy and has resided in this vicinity ever since. He was married to Miss Ida May Proctor, of Muscatine. She died in February, 1898, after having lived at Columbus City 32 years, He is survived by his son, Loren, of Columbus Junction, and brother, C. O. Bond of Shelby, Mich. The funeral services were held at the U. B. church, Columbus City, Saturday at 2, conducted by Rev. S. L. Dezell. Interment in Columbus City cemetery.
