Mrs. A. J. Burkes. Martha Florence Pine was born in Cable county, West Virginia, May 24, 1857 and died in Columbus City, March 17, 1923. If she had lived until May 24 she would have been sixty six years old. Her death came as a result of an illness lasting two years. For sometime she has been suffering from enlargement of the heart. She was united in marriage to Mr. A. J. Burkes in Cable county, West Virginia, December 25, 1878. To this union were born two children, one daughter, Mrs. Frank Ogier and one son, Walter, who died in infancy. She leaves to mourn her loss the following sisters: Mrs. Hester Pigman of near Gladwin, Mrs. Mary Simmons of Columbus Junction, Mrs. W. A. DeVore of Bettendorf and one brother, A. F. Pine of Columbus City, also two grandsons, Chester and Walter Ogier. One sister preceded her in death, Mrs. David Weaver.

Mrs. Burkes was converted in the United Brethren church at Bethel on Goose Creek in 1890. About twenty years ago they moved to Davenport, Iowa and united with St. John M. E. church. Returning again to Columbus City church work was renewed and given first place in their life. For the past two years they made their home with Mrs. Frank Ogier. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the home of her brother, Alex Pine and interment was made in the Columbus City cemetery.
