Page 1Jacob Daniel Webster VanDyke was born March 17, 1845, at Frankford, Clinton county, Indiana and died at his home in Fredonia, Louisa county, Iowa, April 12, 1922, at the age of 77 years and 26 days. He was the son of Jacob Deardoff and Hannah VanDyke. His mother died when he was five years of age and the family then moved to Allamekee county, Iowa. From there they moved to seventy-six Township in Muscatine county where they lived a few years then came to Concord township in Louisa county where he since resided.
Mr. Van Dyke enlisted in Company A of the 7th Iowa Infantry, November 22, 1861 and account of disability was discharged April 24, 1862. He reenlisted in Company C of the 14th Iowa, October 14, 1862 and was honorbly discharge at Davenport, Iowa, November 16, 1864.
He was married to Nancy A. Marvin, August 23, 1877 and to this union were born sons, Jereboam, Charles Henry, deceased; Scott W. who resides near Fruitland; Benjamin H. and Hurbit, deceased; and three daughters; Mrs. Sumner Kulp, of Oakville; Mrs Fred Manley, of Fairfield and Amelia A, deceased. Jeroboam, the only one at home and the faithful wife and mother have cared for Mr. VanDyke during an illness of eleven years, besides his intimate relatives he is survived by two half brothers, Robert Van Dyke, of Muscatine and Butler Van Dyke, of Marion, Iowa.
Mr. Van Dyke many years ago united with the Pleasant Grove Bethel church and died in the Christian faith. Funeral services were held at the Fredonia Methodist church Thursday afternoon conducted by Rev. W. H. Dillon with interment in the Fredonia cemetery.
