Irene, the eight year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Johnston, was killed Wednesday evening, October 12, at her home near Letts, while riding the horse which was used in pulling hay into the barn. The horse was an old family horse and the girl has ridden him often but it is supposed that he became frightened at the barking of a dog and made a sudden lung throwing the little rider violently to the ground. Mr. Johnston, who was on the wagon, heard her scream "daddy" and rushing through the barn he found her lying about ten feet beyond the broken end of the hay rope. She was unconscious but was hurried to the Hershey hospital at Muscatine where everything possible was done to revive her without avail. She was born March 8, 1913 and is survived by her stricken parents and three brothers Harlan, Harry and Paul. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock at the Cedar Bethel church.
